Shake Open and Pour, a Milk Shake

One of the catchiest commercial jingles around was the above refrain. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to locate a picture. But I was able to dig up a little info on it.

Milk Shake was a Borden's product. There seemed to be a brief craze in the mid-to-late 60's of selling canned milk shakes. A rival brand was Great Shakes, which also had a killer jingle.

Anyhow, this song stuck in my head as a kid, and I can recall most of the lyrics:

Shake open and pour, a milk shake!
Shake open and pour, a milk shake!
(Something something), in a can
(Something else), it's crazy man!
No fountain drink is better than

At this point a kid would screw up his line and blurt out
er, shake open and pour!

Help me with the missing lyrics, would you? And if someone can spot a graphic, let me know.

Cathy:

I found this through a search because I had a dream about the Great Shakes shaker that we had when I was a kid. It was was brown and had a lighter brown/tan lid. There was a line inside where you poured the milk to (1 cup, I think) and then you put the mix in, put on the lid and shook your shake. I think the commercial showed teenagers dancing and shaking their shakes. I miss the 60s - great site!!

Hazel Winbush:

Shake open and pour,
Shake open and pour,
a milkshake!

Borden's milkshake in a can,
Ice Cream rich, its crazy man.

No fountain drink is better than.
Shake open and pour!

Eileen Davenport:

Does anyone remember getting the pop-out cardboard record with these? No one does except my sister and me.

Ralph:

I loved both the Borden's milk shakes in a can and the Great Shakes you mixed. I believe Hazel's lyrics are right on, but I thought it was "shake, open and pour, it's Bordens." I seem to recall that after being pulled from the market, the shakes reappeared for a brief time around 1974 or 1975, I think.

And Cathy is right about the Great Shakes. My Mother still has the shaker and uses it for making gravy. The different flavored powders were tubular and shaped like the sour cream packets you see in fast food restaurants. I wished either or both of these products would come back.

And Eileen, I never saw a record but I was raised in a small town so it probably never get to us.

Jazzy:

I remember the milkshakes in the can to be extremely delicious. They came in vanilla, strawberry and chocolate. Does anyone know if by chance they can be purchased in some nostalgic place. I would be the first to buy.

Shaz:

Hey...I thought I was the only one who remembered that commercial! It use to come on during the Patty Duke Show.

The lyrics...

Shake open and pour
a milkshake!
Shake open and pour
a milkshake!
Borden's milkshake
in a can.
Ice cream taste
It's crazy man!
No ice cream shake tastes greater than
Shake open and pour
music
Chocolate!
music
Strawberry!
music
Vanilla!
Really ice creamy!
It's foamy
It's fun
Borden's milkshake
the only one you can...
Shake open and pour
a milkshake
Shake open and pour
a milkshake!
fade...

There were three kids dancing around their living room. One was a geeky boy and the other two were girls. One had a flip and a velvet bow in her hair as I recall.

Man...I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembers! People look at me like I'm nuts when I sing that song! And I still do.

Anybody remember the lyrics to the Alpha Bits cereal song? I bought a box the other day...
