Well, this war was won a long time ago.
It used to be that when you were in the mood for an all-day sucker, you had a choice to make. Sugar Daddy? Black Cow? Slo Poke?
Decisions, decisions . . .
As I recall, Slo Poke was the direct equal of the Sugar Daddy, the Black Cow being, basically, a Slo-Poke dipped in chocolate. I don't mind telling you, it wasn't much of a competition for me. I must have eaten at least a thousand Black Cows in the 60's.
Holloway was the maker of Slo Pokes and Black Cows. I seem to remember a Pink Cow, too, but couldn't tell you what it was. Maybe someone out there can?
Anyhow, the original companies got swallowed up by bigger boys, and eventually Clark ended up with the Holloway all-day suckers. In 1998, they discontinued the production of the long-lasting caramel goodies.
Sugar Daddy is now owned by Tootsie Roll, and yes, they're still around. So even though Black Cow won the battle in the 60's, as far as I'm concerned, Sugar Daddy won the war.
Check out this site for something else I had completely forgotten about: a coloring book that was given away by Holloway in movie theaters!

Don't you remember the song from the commercial?
"Now there's Black Cow and Pink Cow
and Orange Cow and Green Cow
and Banana Cow and Slo Poke and me"

I too am mourning the loss of the all-day sucker. My mother (80) has been wanting one for the longest time. We have been visiting every sweet shop and candy counter we could think of. We just never thought that it would have been discontinued. I'm sorry I missed the final sales. Had I known, I would still have boxes on hand.

Loved sugar daddies & sugar babies...was there any such thing as "sugar mama?" Oh and all day suckers, my son got something similar at Christmas '07...though not as big as they used to be.

Thank you. I was just sitting here eating a Slo Poke and thinking what happened to those wonderful Black Cow suckers and can I still get one. I guess the answer is no. So sad.

As I thought about it, candy was a big part of being a kid in the 60s and probably the 50s, too. I guess many of those had been around sometime.
There was another sort of sucker in different flavors and I can't remember the name. But there were different flavors like cherry, vanilla or banana, maybe even a grape. Anyone remember?
The mid 70s or later began a campaign against sugar. Poor Sugar Bear was fired and most cereals which had once prominently features sugar now quietly didn't mention it. Candy took a few hits, too. There was some justification. But perhaps too much guilt when only occasionally eaten. I eat only a small portion, a bite or 2. I prefer deep dark chocolate chips as they are much cheaper than their candy bar counter parts. Ya gotta have a mounds or almond joy once in a while or a lice of snickers. Who can resist that. Sugar babies were good, too. How sweet it is!

I remember these items well! Wasn't that much of a fan of them, but always got them in the Halloween bag. I do remember the Pink one, but I didn't like that at all! I remember that Sugar Daddies were always a treat to loose a couple of baby teeth if you tried to bite into them! Probably a cavity fillings too! Tootsie rolls too! Not the greatest for your teeth! I think they make these candies again. Seems I have seen them in retro candie shops!
